The gallery – our participatory research platform

This is an ongoing project and we are aware that it can not progress without the input of communities from Myanmar, Sri Lanka and India. We welcome any feedback and suggestions on the content and direction of the project.

How can we harness the power of digital tools to unite global and local communities in co-creating knowledge related to Bristol’s extensive mineral collections? Museums, libraries, and galleries worldwide face significant challenges in connecting audiences with their collections. In response, the Global Heritage, Local History project employs an image gallery that welcomes comments to foster the co-creation of richer and more diverse narratives.

How can I make a contribution? Simply click on an image below, and a window will open, providing further details about the specimen. You can share your thoughts and comments in the ‘Leave a reply’ section at the bottom of the page. You can also become a Collection Fellow and subscribe to our page for ongoing updates and engagement.

What happens after I contribute? Our moderators carefully verify all replies, incorporating them into the gallery to expand the collective knowledge.

What can I add? We encourage comments and questions related to the specimens. Have you ever come across a similar mineral? Did you or a family member grow up in the region or visit the area where this mineral originates? Perhaps you have had the opportunity to hold or find one of these minerals?  Share what you know about the mineral depicted or express your curiosity about it. You can type your response or even upload images and photos. Feel free to share your drawings as well – they are highly appreciated!

Want to learn more? If you feel you have limited knowledge about minerals or the history of  Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and India but are eager to contribute, fear not! You can explore our learning sections by using the menu links at the top of this page to deepen your understanding and find valuable information.
